Q

Why MuscleBoard?

Strength qualities of lower limb muscles are essential for performance and musculoskeletal health of athletes in many individual and team sports. In addition, these strength qualities are related to quality of life of adults and older individuals. Yet, accurate, portable, simple-to-use, and affordable system for testing the strength qualities of lower limb muscles in field conditions is lacking.

Title

Here we introduce you the MuscleBoard, a novel strength testing system that has been developed by researchers with extensive coaching and clinical experience with the following main purposes in mind:

  • to help coaches and performance specialists in optimising athletes’s performance and reducing lower limb injury risk,
  • to help physicians, physiotherapists and other health specialists in optimising rehabilitation and return to sport (or daily life) processes following lower limb injuries
  • to help fitness and medical professionals in optimising musculoskeletal health and fitness of adults and older individuals.

Through accurate, reliable, and fast measurement of strength qualities of major lower limb muscles, MuscleBoard allows specialists in fields of sports, fitness, sports medicine, orthopaedics, and physiotherapy to test and monitor client’s or patient’s strength and
imbalances in daily practice, and to prescribe optimal training or rehabilitation interventions.

MuscleBoard can also be used as a training or rehabilitation device, where it gives athletes or patients real-time feedback about their performance of chosen exercise.

Software

The main frame and two easily mounted and adjustable force sensors, with integrated wheels and a handle for easy moving of the MuscleBoard.

  • Two straps that are used for pelvis fixation during hip strength testing, and for knee extensor and plantar flexor strength testing.
  • 3 pillows that are used in hip, Nordic hamstring and knee extensor strength testing.
  • Special aluminium “chair” that is used for knee extensor and plantar flexor
    strength testing.
  • “U” shaped aluminium attachment that connects two force sensors during knee
extensor and plantar flexor strength testing.

Specialised acquisition, processing, and reporting software*, with real-time feedback and options to export data and createndividual test report for each client. Simply connect your PC or tablet with the MuscleBoard software via Bluetooth and start using it!

*The current version of the software is compatible only with the android operating system.

Which muscle groups can be tested with MuscleBoard?

The focus is placed on testing the strength of muscle groups that are:

N

Associated with performance of movements that are essential for success in many sports (i.e., jumping, kicking, sprinting, and changes of direction),

N

Frequently injured in sports

N

Associated with increased risk of typical hip and lower limb injuries in sports.

Specifically, MuscleBoard allows you to test maximum strength, explosive strength and
endurance of:

N

Hip flexors and extensors (relevant for sprint, jump and kick performance, and for prevention or rehabilitation of hamstring, iliopsoas and rectus femoris muscle injuries)

N

Hip abductors and adductors (relevant for change of direction performance, and for prevention or rehabilitation of hip adductor, knee and ankle injuries)

N

Hip internal and external rotators (relevant for proper landing control, as well as hip and ACL injury
prevention or rehabilitation)

N

Knee extensors and flexors, including Nordic hamstring testing (relevant for sprint, jump and kick performance, and for prevention or rehabilitation of hamstring, rectus femoris, and knee injuries)

N

Ankle plantar flexors (relevant for sprint and distance running performance, and for prevention or rehabilitation of Achilles tendon and numerous other lower limb injuries)

Main features of the MuscleBoard

N

One dynamometry system that measures strength and endurance of nine most relevant lower limb muscles

N

Fast and simple to use (suitable for testing individuals and larger groups)

N

Test results immediately available on the screen

N

Portable and wireless (can be used in the clinic, in the gym, or on the field)

N
